Update: The House Passed the Reconciliation Bill T Update: The House Passed the Reconciliation Bill That Puts Programs at Risk The U.S. House passed the Budget Reconciliation Bill in early hours of the morning, that would gut key federal programs many of our families and communities rely on. It passed the House with ONE vote and is now heading to the Senate. This bill would seriously hurt Native communities. It rolls back the federal government’s trust responsibility to Tribes and takes aim at programs like Medicaid, SNAP (food assistance), opening public lands to extraction, rolls back federal environmental protections including Environmental Reviews, and changes the structure of Pell Grants, all while weakening the social safety net for tribes and rural communities. We need to speak up now. **Call our North Dakota Senators and tell them to vote NO when this bill reaches the Senate.** **Sen. Right now, Congress is trying to pass a sprawling Right now, Congress is trying to pass a sprawling and ruthless bill that guts and dismantles services, programs, policies, and laws that rural communities depend on for their health and well-being – so billionaires and corporations can get richer and pay less in taxes. Here’s what this bill would do: * Strip $715 billion from Medicaid, leaving over 8 million people, including thousands of Native families, without health coverage. *Destroy clean energy jobs by eliminating tax credits that rural co-ops and homeowners rely on. *Hand over more than 200 million acres of public lands to oil and gas companies, while cutting tribal voices out of the decision-making process. *Cut $290 billion from SNAP by shifting costs to states, which they can’t afford and would take food away from eligible children and families in need. *Gut funding for rural schools, roads, and essential infrastructure by slashing payments tribes and communities receive from energy development on public lands. *Allow corporations to bypass environmental reviews and fast-track pipelines and industrial projects without public input. This bill violates the federal government’s trust responsibility to Tribes by disregarding tribal sovereignty, silencing Native voices in the public input process, and putting sacred lands at risk for the benefit of billionaires and fossil fuel corporations. It’s a reckless assault on Native rights, environmental protections, and the policies meant to safeguard Indigenous lands. Thank you, Natasha for all of your contributions to our team, the dedication, and wisdom you bring to North Dakota Native Vote. Natasha Gourd is a mother of four children and has served five years as vice president of the Bismarck Public Schools Indigenous Parent Advisory Committee. She serves on the Native American Rights Fund Indigenous Peacemaking Advisory Committee. Natasha has developed a diversionary court system for tribal-affected youth and has been a peacemaking consultant for various tribes and organizations for ten years. She serves as the Restorative Practice Council Coordinator for the Consensus Council and a Leadership for Education Equity Public Policy Fellow for the South Dakota Education Equity Coalition. He's been with NDNV since 2023. He started his career in higher education as a student at Turtle Mountain College, where he developed a strong passion for learning and community engagement. Through dedication and persistence, he worked his way through various grant-funded positions, gaining valuable experience in tribal governance, research, and community development.
