Victory Day, often associated with the Battle of the Little Bighorn (also known as the Battle of the Greasy Grass) which took place on June 25-26, 1876, commemorates the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes' victory over the United States Army's 7th Cavalry. This battle is a symbol of resistance against U.S. military expansion. Today is a reminder of our ancestors' bravery and determination to protect our culture, traditions, and homeland.

The NDNV Board of Directors expressed their praises to the team after being notified about the achievement with the Chairman of the Board, Wes Davis, exclaiming, “Being awarded the Unsung Hero of Democracy award affirms that our work to advocate for fair legal practices to uphold the distinct sovereignty of Tribal Nations, does create a pathway to equitable access to justice for all Nations.”

The American Bar Association Task Force will present the award in Chicago during the Democracy Summit luncheon at the ABA Annual Meeting on Friday, August 2, 2024.

On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law, making Juneteenth a federal holiday. Despite its federal status, only 18 states have passed laws to fund Juneteenth as a paid state holiday as of 2024.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and has become a day of celebration, reflection, and education, recognizing both the struggles and achievements of African Americans.

However, the fight for equality continues to this day with divisions on race and the legacy of slavery still being a topic of conversation amongst voters. This election year is an important one for all Americans, especially marginalized groups like African Americans and Native Americans, because of its potential to shape the future of civil rights, social justice, and the need for fair policies.

We acknowledge the significance of today as well as the importance of the continued work for communities of color to combat voter suppression and ensure all of our rights and votes are protected in the future.
