Hello,

The 2025 ND legislative session has now concluded. We will have an updated report on how the bills we tracked performed available to you soon. North Dakota Native Vote has supported the passage of HB 1199, an important bill we want to discuss today in honor of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives (MMIWR) Awareness Day. The bill aims to combat disproportionately high rates of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People in North Dakota. It gives a task force $250,000 over the biennium to expand demographic data and to create a “Feather Alert” that would broadcast over state emergency notification systems when an Indigenous person is reported missing.

Testimony provided by Representative Lisa Finley-DeVille stated, “Indigenous people face unique barriers to reaching justice, including jurisdictional challenges, lack of interagency coordination, and cultural misunderstandings. This bill aims to remove those barriers and ensure that law enforcement agencies, tribes, and organizations can collaborate effectively.”

Together, we can create systems of accountability, empower tribal nations, and restore faith in justice for families who have been waiting far too long.”

“Hau mitakuyapi, Oliver Miner Emaciyapi, cante waste nape ceyuzapi.Wambli Paha Ekta Wati na Wakpa waste Hematanhan. Hello, my name is Oliver Miner and I greet you with a warm handshake. I am from Eagle Butte on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe.

I believe it is our responsibility as members of society to get involved in government. It is important to get more natives a seat at the table of decision making. Politics recently reminds of a candle fading as the wind of doubt blows in. One option is to back down and let our lights run out and accept an unjust government. Another option would be to burn bright with knowledge, compassion, and honesty.  Then we all begin to pick up the baton in our own responsibilities to light each other’s candles.. Mitakuye Oyasin.”
